What to Expect from an Off Highway Van Shop Tour

You've watched the walkthroughs; you've read the forum threads; saved the Instagram posts; compared camper van layouts in three browser tabs; and probably built the same van four different ways in your head.
You have walked the aisles at Adventure Van Expo and Overland Expo. Maybe you even stopped by an RV dealership lot and asked a salesperson about lithium capacity, then watched his eyes glaze over while he fumbles around trying to find last year's brochure.
Sure, you can learn a lot through a screen. The only remaining variable is the one you can't resolve from a screen? What it actually feels like to sit in the van you are about to invest in. That is what a visit to our Salt Lake City facility is for. Here is what to expect when you walk through our doors:
HOW IT'S MADE: OFF HIGHWAY VAN EDITION
Our build process splits into two well-defined build categories and you will see both when you tour our Salt Lake City based production facility.
Every Off Highway Van start its journey as an empty Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 cargo van chassis. It's then added to our build queue and awaits it's arrival in the first build zone: the heavy lifting, or PreBuild, as we like to call it.
When PreBuild begins, we cut holes for your windows and roof-mounted air conditioners; your suspension is installed; limited slip differentials, underbody components, all come together to form the structure of your adventure van build. This is loud, structural, unglamorous work, and it is the foundation of every luxury off-grid van we engineer.
After the main structural work is complete, your Off Highway Van build moves into a designated build bay, where it will live for the next 6-7 weeks while your bespoke interior comes together.
COMPONENTS ENGINEERED IN-HOUSE
Behind that, you'll find our fabrication area, where your van's galley, drawers, refrigerator housings, overhead cabinetry, and the rest of its modular aluminum architecture are assembled.
Components leave for powder coating and return in your chosen finish. The vans are here. The parts are here. The team is here. Nothing is waiting on a vendor three states away.
SAME BUILD CREW: START TO FINISH
This is the part that is difficult to appreciate from photos.
We are one of the few production van builders in the country where a dedicated team works on your van from the first cut to final delivery. Not a station-by-station handoff. Not a different crew every Monday. The same people who start your adventure van finish your adventure van.
The reason we do this? Quality control. Every handoff is an opportunity for something to get missed, so, we removed them. When you visit, you can meet the actual team that will be assigned to your build and get to know them personally. This puts a face and a name to the quality of your build, not a ticket number.
HOW WE BUILD A PREMIUM CAMPER VAN IN 8 WEEKS
Everyone asks how we do it... Most builders quote six months; some quote a year. We deliver your completed adventure van in eight weeks, and this efficiency doesn't come from working faster or cutting corners.
It all comes down to our engineering.
At Off Highway Van, we offer three models on both the 170 and 144 Mercedes Benz Sprinter chassis, all built from modular aluminum components engineered for efficient install and longevity. We don't have to solve a new geometry problem on every van. We solved it once, thoroughly, and now we execute on our solution. That same aluminum and composite construction is also roughly 1,000 pounds lighter than conventional van builds, which your payload, your brakes, and your fuel economy will appreciate.
Eight weeks is not a shortcut. It is what happens when the engineering and the heavy lifting is finished before your build even begins.
DRIVE BOTH SPRINTER CHASSIS. SIT IN ALL 3 OFF HIGHWAY VAN MODELS
Here is the single strongest argument for making the trip.
We build the Doc Holliday, the Sundance Kid, and the Davey Jackson on both the 144-inch and 170-inch chassis. Same DNA, same floorplan, different lengths. You can test drive both wheelbases back to back, in one afternoon. You can sit in all three layouts and find out which one your lifestyle actually gels with and be confident in your decision.
Wheelbase is the decision people most often get wrong on paper. A 170 looks like more van until you park one. A 144 looks like a compromise until you drive one through a canyon road and realize how much of your trip happens behind the wheel. Twenty minutes in each answers a question that six months of forum reading will not.
THE DECISIONS YOU JUST CAN'T MAKE ONLINE
Spec sheets handle the numbers. They do not handle any of the fun parts of your build like:
Porcelain or solid surface countertops?
Which wall treatment?
Which upholstery and stitching?
Which flooring?
Which wood species?
And the powder coat options, which we lay out in person, because a color swatch on a computer monitor and a coated aluminum swatch can yield two totally different results.
Then, there are the questions that only make sense once you are standing in the van. Do you need an awning or is it roof weight you will never deploy? Microwave or more cabinet space? Heated floors, or is that solving a problem you don't have? What does a 48-volt air conditioner actually mean for your night at 95 degrees with no hookups?
We will walk you through every one of those, slowly, including the ones where the honest answer is that you should skip the option. You aren't paying for upgrades and accessories you don't want.
